Been thinking about building my own rig... I have a fairly out of date laptop, one that can hardly run CS 1.6 (not that anyone plays it anymore). But anywho, just wondering if you good folks could give me some advice as to where to look for some solid (but not crazy expensive) parts so that I can have a nice, capable gaming computer. doesn't need to be anything over the top, just wanna be able to run battlefield 3 and any of the other newer games that come out. like i said, doesn't have to be "top of the line"... just need something good and reliable.

any suggestions as to where to look/start? i'm not the most computer savvy person in the entire world, just know the basics as to what is needed.

-processor
-power supply
-ram
-motherboard
-vid card
-hard drive
-blu ray/dvd rom
-monitor
-tower
-fans

i know jimmy, duke, and ze know a good amount of this stuff. any and all input would be appreciated.

p.s. i really don't wanna go over a thousand bucks. i have no problem with buying a part every couple weeks or month until i get it all. can't really buy everything all at once (poor college student).

thanks doods.

So I spent 10 dollars at a casino the other night (never been to one before) and ended up winning 250 bucks on a slot machine. I guess that's a good place to start with my computer building. Any suggestions as to what to buy first?

might as well start with the case and a motherboard. That way, when you get other pieces over time, you can pop them bad boys right into your project. I'll link a couple later, got a meeting to run off to now.

Yeah what Ze said.
If this ends up taking a while, it's best to get stuff like a video card and cpu last. Those types of things are always being outdated and prices are always shifting so what you buy today will be cheaper tomorrow and be outclassed by something new.

Also, if you have a case, you know your size constraints. If you have a motherboard, you know what you have as far as compatibility is concerned.

this is my case, and I freaking love it. Though it is GIANT!!! and I mean GIANT!!! It's not going to fit in any computer desk that you have (mine sits on the floor next to my desk). I wanted a full tower so I had plenty of room to fit things being my first ever built....but its a bit overkill.

The next case is a mid tower (a little smaller than the above one) and it seems a lot of people like Antec for cases

Cheaper model:

More $$ model:

I'd wait to get more input from others though, I've only build 1 PC so I'm still new to this. If up to me, and knowing your financial situation, I would tend toward an AMD built (its a little cheaper but generally considered the best bang for the buck) So we're talking AMD CPU and an ATI GPU type of setup, which is what I have.

Get those and then when you are ready we will add a PSU, hard drive and DVD drive. I completely agree with Sev, lets save the GPU and CPU for last.

PS: I'd love to hear other's thoughts on what I suggested thus far, I'm very willing to learn.

I've always had Intel/NVidia, and I have heard many bad things about ATI cards over the years about random things.
But other than hear-say I can't say ATI is bad. Just that I wouldn't ever consider not getting NVidia since I've never had an issue.

never had an issue with ATI/AMD

Its all a matter of chance, sometimes you get a bad piece of equipment no matter who makes it.

Yes start with a motherboard and CPU, they are the basis of what the rest of your PC will end up looking like.

You still havent messaged me back res. *sadface*

My 8800GT died on my a few days ago. Stuck in an old Radeon that my roommate had sitting around but my dad decided to surprise me today and buy me a Radeon HD6870... so I'm pretty stoked.

I can has review? I'm trying to decide between this card (6870) for my new build or pushing up to a 6950. do you play games at 1920x1080? Card cranking out the frames? Games you've played it with? Tried BC2 with it?

I'm a mechanical engineering student with almost no free time, so no, I have not really done anything with it, lol...

I'll put it through something a bit more vigorous when I get the chance (I tried it out on TF2 against some bots at 1680x1050 with max settings and was getting 60+ fps) but my cpu is only a Core 2 Duo 2.83GHz and I've only got 3 gigs of ram so I'm a bit limited in those regards.
And my monitor only goes up to 1680x1050, thus why I didn't have TF2 at 1920x1280.
